The Republican-led Florida House Education and Employment Committee passed the Parental Rights in Education Bill along party lines last week, which would require school districts to implement “procedures to reinforce the fundamental right of parents to make decisions regarding upbringing and control of their children.”Īlso known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, the legislation would prohibit teachers from discussing LGBTQ topics in public schools that are not considered “age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students.” The bill doesn’t specify which topics or issues would be deemed inappropriate, nor does it state which grade levels would be affected. Florida lawmakers have advanced a bill that would ban all discussion of gender identity and sexual orientation in the classroom.
